Add Page Numbers to a PDF

Print page numbers on a PDF: at the bottom or the top, on the left, in the middle or on the right, in the style you choose. It happens inside your browser, so the document never leaves your device.

The numbers are added; nothing else is touched

Each page keeps everything it had: the text you can select, the pictures, the fonts. The number is drawn on top in Helvetica, a font every PDF reader has built in, 10 mm in from the edge of the page. The change is added to the end of the file the way the PDF standard provides for edits, so bookmarks, links and filled-in forms all stay as they were.

Sideways pages and covers

A page stored on its side and shown turned still gets its number at the bottom of what you see, the right way up. Tick Leave the first page without a number for a document with a cover: the numbering then starts on page 2, from the first number you choose, so a report can start at 1 on its first page of text. The example line under the button shows exactly what the first and last numbers will read before you download.

Why it matters that nothing is uploaded

Documents get page numbers when they are about to be handed in or sent: a thesis, a legal bundle, a tender, a set of statements. This page adds them inside your browser and saves the result straight to your device; the file is never sent anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

Will the numbers cover my text?

They sit 10 mm in from the edge of the page, where most documents leave a margin. If a page has text right at the edge, choose another position or a smaller size.

Can I start from a number other than 1?

Yes. Type the first number to print; each following page counts up from it. With the cover left unnumbered, the first number goes on page 2.

What does Page 1 of 9 count?

The last number printed: the first number plus the pages that get a number, less one. A 10-page document with an unnumbered cover, starting at 1, reads Page 1 of 9 to Page 9 of 9.

Are bookmarks and forms kept?

Yes, the numbers are added to the end of the file without rewriting it. Only a file whose index is damaged has to be rebuilt, which keeps the pages but not bookmarks or forms, and the page tells you before you download.

Can I number a password-protected PDF?

No, its contents are encrypted. If you know the password, open the file in your PDF reader, save a copy without protection, and number that copy.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. The PDF is read and changed by JavaScript inside your own browser, and the result is saved straight to your device. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored - close the tab and it is gone.
