The Indian land units, and where they come from
Most of them are defined against the acre or the square yard, which is why the numbers look arbitrary until you see the relationship:

Guntha is common in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Cent turns up in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and parts of Karnataka. Marla and kanal are Punjab and Haryana. Ground is largely Chennai. Gaj is simply the square yard, used across the north.
Bigha is the one to be careful with
A bigha is not a fixed size. It varies by state, and in some places by district, from roughly 1,600 square yards to well over 2,700. There is no single correct number, which is why this page lists bigha more than once with the size written into each option instead of quietly picking one for you.
Before any of this touches money, check the figure against a sale deed, a 7/12 extract or your local registrar. A converter can only do arithmetic; it cannot know which definition your district records use. The same caution applies to katha, which follows bigha and varies with it.

How many square feet is one guntha?
One guntha is 1,089 square feet, which is 121 square yards or about 101.17 square metres. Forty guntha make one acre, which is the check worth remembering when a figure looks wrong.
Why does bigha appear more than once in the list?
Because a bigha is not one fixed size. It differs from state to state and sometimes from district to district, so a single bigha figure would be wrong for most people who used it. Each bigha in the list carries its size in square yards, so pick the one your local records actually use and confirm it against a sale deed before relying on it.
How many cents are in an acre?
Exactly one hundred. A cent is defined as one hundredth of an acre, which is 435.6 square feet or about 40.47 square metres. It is used mostly in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and parts of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
