Where the rates come from

The rates are the euro reference rates the European Central Bank publishes every working day at about 4 pm Central European Time. This site picks them up the same evening, so the page shows the latest working day's rates, with their date above the result. On weekends and bank holidays nothing new is published and the last working day's rates stay. A rate between two currencies other than the euro, such as dollars to rupees, is worked out through the euro.

Why your bank gives a different rate

These are reference rates: the middle of the market, with nothing added. A bank, a card or a money transfer service adds its own margin, often 1 to 4 percent, and sometimes a fee on top. That makes this page a good way to check what a transfer really costs: convert the amount here, compare it with what will arrive, and the difference is the margin.

Dirham, riyal and other fixed currencies

The UAE dirham, Saudi riyal, Qatari riyal, Omani rial and Bahraini dinar are fixed by their central banks to the US dollar, and the Nepalese rupee to the Indian rupee at 1.6. They are not among the reference rates, so the page works them out from the currency they are fixed to, and says so under the result.

Frequently asked questions

How often are the rates updated?

Once every working day, in the evening Indian time, after the European Central Bank publishes them. The date of the rates is shown on the page, and the page warns you if they are more than four days old.

Is this the rate I will get when I send money?

Usually not. Banks, cards and transfer services add a margin to the reference rate, and some charge a fee as well. Use this rate to see how much they add.

Can I convert rupees to dirhams or riyals?

Yes. Choose INR and AED or SAR. Gulf currencies are fixed to the US dollar, so their rate is worked out from the dollar's rate.

Why is a currency missing?

The page lists the currencies that have a daily reference rate, the euro, and six currencies fixed to one of them. Others, such as the Pakistani rupee or the Sri Lankan rupee, have no reference rate here, so they are left out rather than guessed.

Is anything I type sent anywhere?

No. The rates are a small file on this site that loads with the page, and the conversion happens in your own browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere or stored.
