How to use it
- Pick the two dates. The order does not matter — it works out the gap either way.
- Tick the box if both days should count. A notice period, a leave application or a hotel booking usually wants that; an age or a deadline usually does not.
- Read the breakdown under the big number for the calendar answer in years, months and days.
Why one gap has more than one right answer
Ask how long from 1 January to 2 January and there are two honest replies. One day passed, and two days were involved. Neither is wrong; they answer different questions. Payroll and leave forms usually count both days, while ages and deadlines count the days that elapsed.
That single tick box is the difference, and it is the reason two people using two calculators get answers one apart and both think the other is broken.
Months are counted by the calendar
A calendar month is not thirty days. From 31 January to 28 February is one month here, and so is 1 January to 1 February, even though one is 28 days and the other is 31. That is how a rent agreement, a notice period and a court date all count, so it is how this page counts.
The total days figure and the years-months-days figure will therefore not agree if you try to convert one into the other by dividing. Both are correct; they are simply different units.
Working days
The working day count treats Monday to Friday as working and excludes Saturdays and Sundays. It does not know about public holidays, because they differ by state, by year and by employer, and a number that silently guessed them would be worse than no number. Take your own holiday list off the figure.
Frequently asked questions
Does the count include the end date?
Only if you tick the box. By default it counts the nights between the two dates, so 1 January to 2 January is one day. Tick include the end date and it counts both days themselves, which gives two. Notice periods and leave applications usually want the second one.
How are the months counted?
By the calendar, not by dividing days by thirty. The gap from 31 January to 28 February is one month here, the same as 1 January to 1 February, because a month is whatever the calendar says it is. That is why the years, months and days line does not always agree with total days divided by 30.
What counts as a working day?
Monday to Friday. Saturdays and Sundays are excluded, and public holidays are not, because holidays differ by state and by year and this page has no way to know which ones apply to you. Subtract your own holidays from the figure.
