Rotating and mirroring are not the same thing
A rotation turns the whole picture about its centre; everything that was in it is still in it, just at a different angle. A mirror flip swaps left for right, which looks almost identical on a landscape but reverses every piece of writing in the photo and moves a parting in someone's hair to the other side.
That matters more than it sounds. A flipped photo of a document, a number plate or a shop sign is unreadable, and a flipped photo of a person often looks subtly wrong to anyone who knows them. If the picture merely came out sideways, you want a rotation.
Why a sideways photo happens at all
Phone cameras almost always record the picture the same way round and add a small note to the file saying which way the phone was held. Most apps read that note and turn the photo for you. Some do not, and the picture arrives on its side — not because it was saved wrongly, but because the note was ignored.
Rotating it here writes the turn into the pixels themselves, so every program will show it the same way from then on.
Frequently asked questions
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. Your browser reads the file, draws it turned onto a canvas and hands the result back to you. Nothing is sent to any server, so there is no upload to wait for and no copy of your photo anywhere but your own device.
Does rotating lose any quality?
A turn of 90 or 180 degrees moves whole pixels around and loses nothing in itself. But saving the result re-encodes the file, and for a JPEG that costs a little quality every time. One rotation is invisible; rotating and saving the same JPEG twenty times is not. A PNG is lossless and never suffers from this.
Why is my photo sideways in the first place?
Because the camera stored it the way the sensor saw it and added a note about how the phone was held. Apps that read the note show it upright; apps that ignore it show it on its side. Rotating here writes the turn into the picture itself, so the note stops mattering.
Can I rotate by something other than 90 degrees?
Not here. A free angle has to invent pixels along every edge and leaves corners that must be cropped or filled, which makes it a different job with different decisions. Quarter turns and mirrors are exact, and they cover almost every reason a photo needs turning.
Do the buttons stack up?
Yes. Each press adds to what is already there, so two rights make an upside-down picture and a flip on top of a rotation gives both. The tiles show exactly where you are, and Reset puts it back to the original.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. Everything happens in JavaScript inside your own browser. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is saved - close the tab and it is gone.
