Why there are no templates
Most meme pages hand you a library of famous pictures. Those pictures belong to somebody — a photographer, a film studio, a stock agency, a person who once posted a photo of their dog — and a page that hosts them and invites you to redistribute them is taking a risk that you inherit.
This page has none, deliberately. It works on whichever picture you bring, so what you make is your responsibility and your choice, and nothing you upload here goes anywhere. If the picture is yours, or you have the right to use it, you are on solid ground.
The classic look, and why it works
White letters with a thick black outline, in capitals. It looks like a style choice and it is really a legibility trick: the outline makes the caption readable on any background, bright or dark or busy, because at least one of the two colours always contrasts with whatever is behind it. That is the reason the format has outlasted every trend since.
Long captions do not fall off the edge
Text that is too wide is wrapped onto more lines. If it still will not fit in three lines the letters are shrunk until it does, and the tiles show how many lines each caption ended up on. What does not happen is the caption running off the side of the picture, which is the most common way this goes wrong on a phone.
Text lives in the picture, not on it
Once you download it the words are part of the image. They cannot be edited, searched, or read aloud by a screen reader — so if the joke matters to someone using one, say it in the text of the post as well as in the picture.
Frequently asked questions
Why are there no meme templates?
Because famous meme pictures belong to whoever made or photographed them, and a page that hosts and redistributes them takes on a legal risk it would pass to you. This one works only on a picture you bring, so the choice, and the responsibility, are yours.
Is my picture uploaded?
No. It is drawn on a canvas in your own browser, and the finished meme is handed straight back. Nothing is sent to a server.
Why does my caption look smaller than I set it?
Because it was too long to fit at that size. Text is wrapped onto up to three lines, and if it still will not fit the letters are shrunk until it does, so that it never runs off the edge.
Can I use lower-case letters?
Yes, untick the capitals box. The classic look is capitals because they read best at a glance, but lower case works fine for a quieter caption.
Does it work with non-English text?
Yes, as long as your device has a font that includes those letters. Capitals only apply to alphabets that have them, so Telugu and Hindi text is unaffected by that box.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. Everything happens in JavaScript inside your own browser. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is saved - close the tab and it is gone.
