PDF Metadata Editor

Every PDF carries details you do not see on the page: who wrote it, with what, and when. See them here, change them or remove them, inside your browser, so the document never leaves your device.

What a PDF says about you

Besides its pages, a PDF keeps a small set of details: a title, an author, a subject and keywords, the program it was written in and the one that made the PDF, and when it was created and last changed. The author is often filled in from the name on your computer, without anyone asking, and the program names can show which software and version you use. Anyone who opens the file can read them in their PDF reader's document properties.

Removed means removed

An ordinary edit to a PDF adds the change to the end of the file and leaves the old version in place, where it can still be dug out. This page writes the whole document again instead, from its contents down, so the old details do not survive in it. PDFs often carry a second copy of the details in a format called XMP; it is removed too, so no reader is left showing the old ones. No date is added when you save: when you edited the file is nobody else's business.

The rest of the document is not touched

Pages, bookmarks, links and forms are copied exactly as they were; only the details change. Details kept inside pictures, such as a photo's camera information, are part of the picture and are not changed here. To clear those, remove them from the photo before it goes into the PDF.

A digital signature is the one thing that cannot survive. It covers the file's exact bytes, so once anything in a signed PDF changes, the signature no longer checks out. The page tells you when a PDF is signed, before you save.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove my name from a PDF?

Choose the PDF, empty the Author box (or press Clear every detail), and save. The file you download has no author anywhere in it, including the second XMP copy many PDFs carry.

Does saving change the pages?

No. The pages, bookmarks, links and forms are copied as they were. Only the details change, and anything the document no longer used is left out, so the file can come out slightly smaller.

What are Made with and Converted by?

The program the document was written in, such as a word processor, and the program that turned it into a PDF. Both are filled in automatically and can show which software and version you use.

Why is no date of my edit added?

Because when you edited a file is your business. Untick Keep the dates to remove the creation and change dates as well.

Can I edit a password-protected PDF?

No, its contents are encrypted. If you know the password, open it in your PDF reader, save a copy without protection, and use that copy here.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. The PDF is read and written again by JavaScript inside your own browser, and the result is saved straight to your device. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored - close the tab and it is gone.
