How to use it

India uses UK sizes
This is the useful shortcut: an Indian size is a UK size. Shoes sold in India are marked on the British system, so an Indian 8 and a UK 8 are the same shoe. From there, US men's sizes run about one number higher and US women's about two, while EU sizes are on a different scale entirely.
That one-number gap is why ordering from an American site so often goes wrong. A man who wears 8 in India is usually a US 9. Ordering "8" because that is the number he knows brings a shoe a full size too small.
The number that actually means something
A shoe size is not a measurement of your foot. It describes the last — the mould the shoe was built around — and every brand uses its own lasts. Two shoes both marked UK 8 can differ by most of a size, which is why a brand you trust fits and a new one does not.
Foot length in centimetres is the only figure that means the same thing everywhere, and it is shown here for that reason. To measure: stand on a sheet of paper with your heel against a wall, mark the tip of your longest toe, and measure from wall to mark. Do it in the evening, when feet have swollen slightly, and measure both — most people have one foot a little larger, and that is the one to fit. Many brands publish a centimetre chart, and when they do, it beats the size number every time.
