Split PDF

Cut one PDF into several: every page on its own, the ranges you type, or parts of the same length. It all happens inside your browser, so the document never leaves your device.

A comma between files. 9- means page 9 to the end; a single number is a single page.

    Three ways to split

Into the page ranges I type makes one file for each range: 1-3, 4-8, 9- gives three files, the last running from page 9 to the end. A single number is a single page, so typing just 7 pulls page 7 out on its own. Every page on its own makes one file per page. Into parts of the same length cuts the document every so many pages; the last part takes whatever is left. More than one file comes as a single ZIP, because browsers will not save dozens of downloads at once.

Every file is complete, and nothing is redrawn

The pages are copied exactly as they were: text stays text you can select, pictures are not compressed again. Each new file carries everything its pages need, fonts included, so it opens on its own. That is also why ten files cut from one PDF can add up to more than the original: each of them has its own copy of the fonts. A link from one page to another still works when both pages land in the same file, and does nothing when they do not.

Why it matters that nothing is uploaded

Splitting is often how people send one page of something private: a single month from a bank statement, one page of a contract, the page of a report that matters. This page does the cutting inside your browser and saves the files straight to your device; the document is never sent anywhere.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I take out just one or two pages?

Choose Into the page ranges I type and type the pages: 5 gives a file with page 5, and 3-4 a file with pages 3 and 4. Each range you type becomes its own file.

Can the same page go into more than one file?

Yes. Ranges may overlap: 1-5, 3-8 makes two files that both contain pages 3, 4 and 5.

Why is the ZIP bigger than my PDF?

Each new file has to carry everything its pages use, fonts included, so a font shared by all the pages is copied into every file. The pages themselves are not changed or compressed.

What happens to bookmarks and fillable forms?

Bookmarks belong to the whole document and are not carried into the parts. Forms keep what was typed in them, but their boxes can no longer be filled in.

    Can I split a password-protected PDF?

No, its pages are encrypted. If you know the password, open the file in your PDF reader, save a copy without protection, and split that copy.

    Is there a size limit?

The PDF can be up to 500 MB, and the files made from it can add up to 1 GB, which is about what a browser can safely hold. For more, split into fewer, larger parts.

    Is my PDF uploaded?

No. The PDF is read and split by JavaScript inside your own browser, and the files are saved straight to your device. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored - close the tab and it is gone.
